Before any floor goes down, the base has to be level and dry. It is the check most often skipped and the one that causes the most grief afterwards, because a floor that moves cannot be fixed without lifting the lot.
If you already have an old timber floor, it is almost always worth restoring. Sanding and sealing costs less than a new floor and the result beats any imitation.
